What the inlet filter protects against

Mobile phase reservoirs accumulate particulates. Some come in with the solvent, some are shed by tubing and caps, and buffer salts precipitate at the interface as solvent evaporates. Whatever the source, that material heads for the pump and then the column.

A column frit is typically 0.5 to 2 microns. It will catch the particles, and in catching them it will progressively block. Rising back pressure is the visible symptom. The column is doing the filter job, and paying for it with service life.

The laboratory case

A Nordic laboratory group running routine analytical work was replacing columns more often than the method warranted. Inlet filtration was in place but the filters were general-purpose parts with no extractables data.

  • Switched to analytical-grade sintered PE inlet filters with documented low extractables.
  • Standardised on a single grade across all reservoir bottles to remove a variable.
  • Introduced a scheduled inlet filter replacement interval instead of replacing on failure.

Result

Column service intervals lengthened and back pressure profiles became more stable across the group. Retention time reproducibility improved as a secondary effect, since flow delivery was no longer varying with reservoir condition.

Selection notes

For HPLC and UHPLC inlet service, specify 10 to 20 micron sintered PE. Finer grades restrict flow and can cause pump cavitation at higher flow rates. The filter should be chemically compatible with the full range of mobile phases in use, including any buffer at the extremes of your pH range.
